To Be Somebody

Goldenseal

Joe Strummer is probably not on your auto-dialer. Johnny Lydon isn’t in your Rolodex. But you know Jesse Malin, and you can be extremely proud of your punky buddy. Malin has picked up where he left off with D Generation’s 1999 swan song masterpiece, Through The Darkness. Bellvue is the name of Malin’s new band, and a New York take on despair, prejudice and redemption is its game. To Be Somebody gleans its inspiration from Hell’s Kitchen and even Melrose Avenue: "When the pearly gates left a nice estate/He drove a 4 X 4 to the PCH," goes a line from "Bad Actor." Malin’s evocative vocals and their accompanying wall-o-guitars often recall Neil Young with Crazy Horse, especially on "Sorrow." D Generation has previously acknowledged the influence with a cover of Young’s "Don’t Be Denied" on Darkness. "Sorrow" sees Malin teamed up with ex D Gen and current Danzig bassman Howie Pyro, while other guests here include Ryan Adams and keyboard player Joe McGinty (Psychedelic Furs, Spacehog). To Be Somebody opens and closes with "My Life," Bellvue’s warning not to judge the denizens of its sordid reality. Malin’s writing and performance have eclipsed anyone he could be compared to. His dear friend Joey Ramone, wherever he may be, surely has To Be Somebody cranked to 10. Grade A+ – Kevin Wierzbicki
