What’s Happening in Los Angeles

Friday, Nov. 10
Islands @ The Fonda
We know diamonds are forever, but in the indie rock landscape, Islands are forever. We’ve come to love Nick Diamonds in the past few years what with his former outfit The Unicorns. Now with Islands, Diamonds is able to still bring about those often insane but highly complex lyrics coupled with the unabashed pop we’ve known to love, but this time a layer of African rhythms (a kin to the seminal Paul Simon album Graceland) is added to the already great mix. Blueprint and Subtitle open. Tickets are available via . The Fonda is located 6126 Hollywood Blvd. in Hollywood. For more information visit

Saturday, Nov. 11
Director’s Commentary Live! @ UCB Theatre
Ever listen to the audio commentary of some of your favorite films on DVD and wonder: “‘man this stuff is just boring?” At the UCB Theatre, Director’s Commentary Live! brings about some of your favorite films and invites some of the crew and stars that made them. But please remember this is the UCB Theatre, looks are to be deceiving. Tonight’s film will be Less Than Zero, the film adaptation of the popular Bret Easton Ellis novel. The film stars Robert Downey Jr. and Andrew McCarthy. One would expect many brat pack jokes. UCB Theatre is located at 5919 Franklin Ave.ñ in Hollywood. For more information visit

Sunday, Nov. 12
Los Angeles Lakers vs. Memphis Grizzlies @ Staples Center
The Los Angeles Lakers are slowly returning to the preeminence they’ve richly held  during their illustrious run in the NBA. The record so far, speaks for itself:. It may be for a few weeks until Number 24 (that's Kobe Bryant if you haven't been following the recent news) gets back to 100% but with the resurgence of Luke Walton, Ronny Turiaf, and the big time play making ability of Mr. Lamar Odom the Lakers look to shock a few West coast powerhouses. The Lakers do battle against the Memphis Grizzlies on Sunday night. Staples Center is located at 1111 South Figueroa Street in Los Angeles. For more information visit

Monday, Nov. 13
Goodfellas/Casino @ New Beverly Cinema
The Martin Scorsese that we know and love came back this year with The Departed. The dirt and grit that we have become a common fixture with Scorsese's earlier films was in full assault with Leonardo DiCaprio and crew. Enjoy the bloodbath and the backstabbing (literally) Sunday night with a double dose of Scorsese's Goodfellas and Casino, complete with all that ultra violence we've embraced throughout the years. New Beverly Cinema is located at 7165 West Beverly Boulevard in Los Angeles. For more information visit

Tuesday, Nov. 14
Forgotten Faces: Portraits Without Pedigree @ Track 16 Gallery
We've been accustomed to seeing personal portraiture associate itself with the honored: royalty and politicians. Forgotten Faces: Portraits Without Pedigree will feature a compilation of portraiture leaning more towards the obscure. For the one of the first times a showcase of the obscured meaning, friends, relatives, bakers, clowns, bankers and yes...even dogs will be shown on display. Track 16 Gallery is located at 2525 Michigan Avenue #C1 in Santa Monica. For more information visit

Wednesday, Nov. 15
Club NME @ Spaceland
Club NME describes itself as being the ONLY alternative night that matters. It’s big talk, but as everyone knows, the NME is one of not the most preeminent music magazines in the UK. Club NME has been a staple from London to Leeds, hitting residents with surprise guest DJs, bands, and the undeniable misbehavior that we know most likely pours out. Club NME now looks to bring all that and more stateside, most notably for us indie loving/electroclash dancing Angelenos. Spaceland is located at 1717 Silverlake Boulevard in Los Angeles.
