WHAT'S HAPPENING IN LOS ANGELES

MUSIC: REBEKAH AND THE DREAMING FERNS
@ Hotel Cafe
See what others are calling "a melting pot of sweet vocal fondue," as Rebekah Jordan performs at 10 p.m. at Hotel Cafe. For more info and to sample her music, visit www.rebekahjordanmusic.com. Hotel Cafe is located at 1623 1/2 Cahuenga Blvd., Los Angeles.

EXHIBIT: AMERICA THE BEAUTIFUL
@ Santa Monica Museum of Art
Anger is certainly present in this show by Exene Cervenka, a founding member of the legendary '70s punk band X. "Beautiful" presents journals, collages and photos representing more than 30 years of her life, more often on the road than not. The journals include observations, rough drafts of songs, photos and mementos; the collages were also created from found materials during her travels.
The Santa Monica Museum of Art is located at 2525 Michigan Ave., Building G1, Santa Monica. For more info, visit www.smmoa.org

THEATER: 42nd STREET
@ Long Beach Performing Arts Center

If there's a shortage of sequins for the rest of the millennium, they're all on stage at "42nd Street," adorning the huge ensemble of tapping boys and girls in one of the most spectacular and lavish Broadway productions. Like a dancer hovering on the tip of her toes on one foot, the entire story for the show balances on but a single line of dialogue. It's a line we've heard paraphrased for years: "You're going out there a youngster but you've got to come back a star!"
The Long Beach Performing Arts Center is located at 300 E. Ocean Blvd., in Long Beach. For more info, visit www.theaterleague.com.

FILM: LADIES AND GENTLEMEN, THE FABULOUS STAINS
@ The Nuart
This clever 1981 film, takes audiences along on a rags-to-riches-to-rags tale of a glam-rock girl band in the late 1970s. The film is a biting, sharply written satire, which wryly dispenses commentary on up-and-coming epidemics like girl bands, 15-minutes-of-fame reality show stars and the over-hype of media spin. It also features members of popular ‘80s bands like the Clash, the Tubes and the Sex Pistols.
The Nuart is located at 11272 Santa Monica Blvd. West Los Angeles, (310) 281-8223. For ticket information and more details, visit www.landmarktheatres.com.

EVENT: DOO DAH PARADE
@ Great Western Forum

Forget judges, themes and fancy floats decorated with flowers. The campy, low-budget Doo Dah Parade in Old Town Pasadena is everything the Tournament of Roses is not. Started in 1978 by a group of friends, the annual Doo Dah Parade now draws more than 1,500 participants each year—some of whom ride through on couches-turned-racecars and toilets-turned-thrones. West Hollywood Cheerleaders (a drag institution) got their start here; The Barbeque and Hibachi Marching Grill Team and The Tequila Mockingbird & The Royal Doo Dah Orchestra entertain in a way you won't see at any other LA parade. The festivities start at 11:30am. The Parade starts at the corner of Raymond and Holly in Old Town Pasadena. For more info, visit www.pasadenadoodahparade.com.

EXHIBIT: MASTERS OF AMERICAN COMICS
@ MOCA

Masters of American Comics brings that Keep On Truckin’ guy out from his subjugation on mud flaps and into the realm of the muses. MOCA’s exhibit examines 15 key American artists who were instrumental in the establishment of comics as an art form. The exhibit features drawings, proofs, comics and vintage funny pages from some of the medium’s most acclaimed artists. Masters of American Comics will give you the opportunity to convince your girlfriend that you’re not just reading stupid "picture books," but works of artistic genius.
MOCA is located at 250 S. Grand Ave., in Los Angeles. For more information, visit www.moca.org.

MUSIC: THRICE/UNDEROATH
@ HOB Sunset

Thrice equals art, for those of you not in the know, and Vheissu is the band’s opus thus far. The Sistine Chapel of radio friendly screamo-punk, if you will. The album itself is a masterpiece bringing together emotional integrity with social awareness, while calling for activism. Hearing the songs live is a moving experience, to say the least.Underoath is by and large the authority on artfully crafting hard-rocking, headbang-worthy, circle pit-instigating screamo with deeper meaning than heartbreak and other such cliché emotions. The House of Blues, Sunset is located at 8430 Sunset. For more info, visit HOB.com.

Wednesday,Nov. 23

EXHIBIT: HOLIDAY LIGHT FESTIVAL
@ Griffith Park
This annual festival, attended by more than 300,000 Angelenos, turns the north side of Griffith Park into a delightful traffic jam once the sun goes down. Families and courting couples queue up in their cars for the chance to drive slowly up Crystal Springs Road, oohing and aahing over the tacky, silly and downright impressive light displays. Local attractions like the Hollywood sign, the L.A. Zoo and Staples Center are celebrated, along with traditional seasonal imagery. Even the most jaded city dweller will be awestruck driving through the tunnel of a million twinkling lights. Griffith Park is located at 2800 Observatory Rd., Los Angeles. For more info, visit www.griffithobs.org.
